Guest Speaker: Jonathan Jay – Buying Businesses Without Using Your Own Money
Jonathan fell into M&A by accident in 1999 with the sale of his publishing business. Fast forward a few years, and he’d bought out a large competitor in another sector, merged it with my existing business, and sold it on to a London-based private equity firm in 2007 in a life-changing deal.
He bought a group of insolvent businesses from a Private Equity firm for £1, turned them around, and sold them 11 months later for £1.25m (although he *never* advises clients to buy a turnaround- they are hard work!)
During the pandemic, he bought an astonishing 48 businesses, grasping the opportunities that others failed to notice.
After being asked to share his business buying knowledge, he founded The Dealmaker’s Academy in 2016. Since then, Dealmakers.co.uk has become the leading M&A educator in the UK, and Jonathan has taught more than 13,500 people worldwide how to buy their first business.

Numbers are the language of business, yet to many business owners, their accounts are more like a foreign language! A lack of understanding brings risk and reduces the potential rewards. It can feel like a continual stream of surprises, but rarely good ones – the VAT bills, Corporation Tax and Personal tax all need to be understood and planned for.
Nick and Simac will walk us through the essential finance basics and the key performance indicators that you need to monitor in your business.
Who should attend?
GrowthCLUB 90-day business planning is designed for business owners and senior managers, though anyone is welcome. Many business owners choose to bring one or two of their senior team. It often helps to bring along more than one person from a company, as it can make it easier to create plans on the day, and to hit the ground running back at the office when it comes to implementing the plans.
Is this just for big businesses?
GrowthCLUB is for just about any business size, whether you’re a business owner with no employees or part of a larger organisation. However, once an organisation reaches the size at which it has more than two or three senior managers, it’s often preferable to run the 90-day planning session in the business or offsite with just a single business. We can facilitate such sessions if you choose, allowing everyone to participate without being distracted by running the event.

Who runs the event?
